Movie Review: The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

Hip hip hooray! Hip hip horray! I’ve waited patiently for a good comedy to come along and make me laugh. And since Hollywood hasn’t done much of a job coming out with anything worthwhile for quite sometime, I decided to pin my hopes on gut-wrenching adolescent humor on The 40 Year Old Virgin. I wasn’t disappointed.

Fucking finally! A movie that rivals the likes of “Animal House,” “Porkys,” “Office Space” and “Clerks” (among many others) has come along. Let me just say it, “The 40 Year Old Virgin is a fucking funny movie.” The wife and I sat down and literally laughed our asses off for 116 minutes. Even the damned credits are funny!

Here’s the overview: The movie focuses on Andy Stitzer (portrayed brilliantly by Steve Carell of “The Daily Show” fame), a 40 year old virgin who is under mounting pressure from his ridiculous friends (each of whom have their theories on getting bitches) to pop his cherry. Each attempt is outrageous and funnier than the prior one . . . culminating with the ‘moment.’

The movie is perfectly cast. David (Paul Rudd) is a sentimental dickbag in love with his ex-girlfriend and tries to live his conquests through Andy. Jay (Romany Malco) is the over-the-top ‘pimp’ friend who tries to teach Andy how to score him some hood rats. Cal (Seth Rogen) is the freakish friend who tries to get Andy into the zany sex world. They each try to take Andy under their wing and each of their attempts fail – not just fail but fail exceptionally! Every one of us have had a friend or two like one of these guys. Shit, I still talk to a few of them now and again (and amazingly they still haven’t changed!).

And believe it or not, I can’t think of a single scene in the movie that didn’t work. The very beginning of the movie is a riot (you’ll appreciate it if you are a man). The scene where Andy is getting his chest waxed will be remembered as an all time great comedy scene. I simply could not stop laughing. The pissed off Indian guy is priceless. Hell, I laughed so hard during some scenes that my fucking head hurt!

I cannot recommend a movie enough. If you need to laugh (and so many of us do), you’ve simply got to watch The 40 Year Old Virgin. If possible wear a diaper, cos I suspect you will piss your pants. And if you can watch it with a few friends and a few beers — do it. Laughter is contagious and my guess is that everyone in the room will be sick with it.

I'm an old, miserable fart set in his ways. Some of the things that bring a smile to my face are (in no particular order): Teenage back acne, the rain on my face, long walks on the beach and redneck women named Francis. Oh yeah, I like to watch and criticize movies.

This movie is by far hands down the best comedy for this year. Also in the same breath, let me say this movie was one step and two genitals away from being a porn. think it would be safe to say that I have been waiting for a comedy in the last few years that would just blow my mind. Now comes The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the raunchy comedy from Judd Apatow (Anchorman) and mild-mannered funnyman Steve Carrell. And I am now proud to say that my wait has just ended.
Steve Carrell plays Andy, a man who collects action figures that are still in their boxes. He cooks fine meals for himself and rides his bike to work at an electronics store. His co-workers really don’t pay attention to him (one even thinks he’s a serial killer) until they needed a fifth man for their poker night, which he gladly accepts. During the game, as most male conversations happen to go, the topic of sex comes along and in a blind panic, Andy declares that a woman’s breasts feel like sand. He is outed almost immediately as a virgin. With the cat out of the bag, he is afraid of the reprecussions of his confession, which he was absolutely right to be. His newfound male compatriots are now bound and determined to help him reach the promise land, even though he himself is not really interested. But they are not really doing it for him. To their train of thought, they need to get him there to affirm their manliness, to say they got a virgin his first slice. Crazy situations ensue and these four men do become friends as they look at each other’s decisions and see their own mistakes through Andy.
This film is deceptive in the best way. You think you’re going to be seeing a raunchy comedy and find yourself watching a human one. And the funny thing is that this movie is both. There are wall to wall sex jokes in here, but these are not obligatory. Another thing I love about this movie is that all of the women you see are very different from each other, with their own agendas and hopes. And no, not all of them are thinking about sex all the time (although you might suspect a couple of them). Andy is the perfect protagonist, not because he’s a shining example of righteousness but because he cares about those around him. He’s just as devious as everybody else, cusses and gets into trouble, insecure and yet determined to make things work.
All in all this movie has you cracking up the whole time. The movie reminded me of Office Space but change the office to a electronics store and the theme is centered around sex instead of work.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone that has a pulse.

I honestly expected a movie like this to come out years ago. This is the teen sex-comedy of the early 80’s aged to roughly the same age of the original audience.

“Dude, this is our last year (in high school/at camp/locked in a Turkish prison). We HAVE to get laid this time!”

    Cue hijinks.
