Last night the anticipated trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was loosed on the internet. For me, it’s a bit of a letdown; what I see feels too damn similar to a mishmash of “Godzilla,” “The Big O” and “Battleship” right now. The hokey battle speech by Idris Elba doesn’t help much either. That being said, it’s still a visual treat — watching monsters rise from the sea, indiscriminately destroy cities and fight massive human controlled robots is still a cool thing to witness unfold. I’m also sure (hoping is probably a better word) the trailer, which is linked below, isn’t showing all the movie has got up its sleeves. See for yourself below and let me know if I’m alone on this limb.

Pacific Rim protects US and UK theaters on July 12, 2013.

Looks like a Michael Bay production. I’m trusting in Guillermo del Toro to make this more than just a “shock and awe” campaign.
