Top 10 Stoner Movies by The Critical Movie Critics

Feature: Top 10 Stoner Movies

While at a party over the weekend I was hanging around a few folks who were happily puffing away and talking incoherently. I got to asking myself, what are the best stoner movies? These guys offered up a few films rather quickly and by the end of the party the list was completed. Here is what a bunch of stoned and drunk people came up with.

Criteria: Gotta have either a memorable stoner in the film or just have pervasive drug use of the marijuana variety.

#10 “How High” (2001)

How High – Top 10 Stoner Movies

Redman and Method Man in a movie in which they smoke pot fertilized with their dead friends ashes. He magically appears before them and helps them pass their THC (Testing for Higher Credentials). Amazingly, they get accepted to Harvard! You can imagine the debauchery that ensues. White people will never be the same.

#9 “Half Baked” (1998)

Half Baked – Top 10 Stoner Movies

Thurgood (Dave Chappelle), Scarface (Guillermo Diaz) and Brian (Jim Breuer) are stoners who have to figure out a way to get their friend Kenny (Harland Williams) out of jail. So they do what they think they know best — peddle pot. This is one of those movies that is funny but a whole lot funnier if you’re stoned.

#8 “Reefer Madness” (1936)

Reefer Madness – Top 10 Stoner Movies

The movie that started it all. It’s really a public service announcement made in 1936 that chronicles how evil and terrible pot is. It was meant to scare the shit out of everyone but it is impossible to not find amusement in it. It’s amazing how sensationalized reefer was way back when — now it’s a ticket if you get caught with a joint in New York (or at least it was a few years ago)!

#7 “Dazed and Confused” (1993)

Dazed and Confused – Top 10 Stoner Movies

A rite of passage movie for a bunch of teens at a Texas high school. Lots of drinking and smoking leads to hazings and pranks. Most memorable is Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey) an older guy who loves to party with high schoolers. When asked about his lifestyle he poignantly replies, “That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.” Amen!

#6 “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle” (2004)

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle – Top 10 Stoner Movies

Roommates Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) love to smoke pot and eat White Castle burgers. They travel all over New Jersey after lighting up in an effort to find an open restaurant. Along the way, they have some strange encounters, most notably one with Neil Patrick Harris.

#5 “The Big Lebowski” (1998)

The Big Lebowski – Top 10 Stoner Movies

From the twisted minds of the Coen brothers. Jeff Bridges is Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a perpetually stoned slacker, who is inadvertently involved in a mistaken identity situation. Two thugs want money from him and piss on his rug in an effort to coerce him into paying. Knowing nothing of the debt, he must figure out how to solve his problem while at the same time getting his rug cleaned or replaced.

#4 “Clerks” (1994)

Clerks – Top 10 Stoner Movies

This is a given. Jay and Silent Bob are two of the most known pot heads in the world. Jason Mewes is a foul mouthed dealer who spouts out some of the funniest lines ever written. Basically, they hang in front of a convenience store selling dope and pissing off the guys inside. This movie belongs in every movie collection.

#3 “Friday” (1995)

Friday – Top 10 Stoner Movies

There has to be an urban movie in the list. Smokey (Chris Tucker) and Craig (Ice Cube) are best friends. Smokey is a burnout that aggravates you so much you just laugh at his incessant whining. His ridiculousness leads to a memorable Friday for everyone on the block. Very funny.

#2 “Up In Smoke” (1978)

Up in Smoke - Top 10 Stoner Movies

The original masterpiece starring Cheech and Chong. These guys were the poster boys for slacking. Their days are consumed with smoking pot, chasing skirts and little else. In this particular title they unknowingly try and smuggle a van made entirely of cannabis into the United States. Those were the days!

#1 “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High – Top 10 Stoner Movies

Probably the best high school film ever made. It boasts an all-star cast made up of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Forest Whitaker, among others. The standout is Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli. As far as I’m concerned Sean Penn will always be the stoned, surfer dude without a care in the world. If you haven’t seen this movie, shame on you.

Honorable Mentions

Like I said, this list was comprised in a state of inebriation. Could we have done a better job sober? Probably. Here are a few that were mentioned but we didn’t think were strong enough candidates to make the final cut.

Got one that we missed, speak up.

There is the priceless scene where the frat guys (and 1 girlfriend) get stoned with their teacher in Animal House: “Am I doing this right?” “Try not to drool on it so much.”

I have to say that Zoolander is one you left out, along with Grandma’s Boy.

If you continue this list then I would throw in Beach, Grass, Dude Where’s My car, Bio-Dome, and some others. but like your friends…i’m a tid bit inebrieated myself :)

Aside from that single scene I don’t think the movie really had a stoner or a pot smoking theme to it.

    Zoolander … Grandma’s Boy … Beach … Grass … Dude Where’s My Car … Bio-Dome

You may have a point with Zoolander and Bio-Dome. No one thought of those. I think the guys in Dude Where’s My Car were just idiots. As for the other movies you mentioned, I’ve never heard of them. Something more for Netflix to provide.

i have to disagree with this list the ultimate film to watch whilst stoned is the yellow submarine by the beatles.

You’re probably right, Yellow Submarine would be an interesting movie to watch while stoned, but the point of this list was to capture the top ten movies starring stoners.

A great list – never been stoned nor intend to but I would have to say the movie that make me feel like I am stoned would be The Wall – Pink Floyd.

On a ratio of amount of pot smoked per minute of screen time, Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke set the bar so high that no other film will ever reach this standard. And the cuss words flowed like cheap beer on a Friday night, much like a Kevin Smith movie.

Well I think that super troopers and MonkeyBonz should be added as well.
I mean just two nights ago I watched MonkeyBonz, while I was high. And it was GREAT.

So I just came across this new sweet stoner flick. It’s a take on the movie Super SIZE me, except instead of eating McDonald’s for 30 days Doug Benson (from VH1) eats and vaporizes medical marijuana for thirty consecutive days. I also found out there are free screeners for the movie up on the film’s site…(www.superhighmemovie.com)… Have fun with this one. Peace.

  17. The Critical Movie Critics

I’d say Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is more of an all around drug movie rather than a stoner flick.

Another must see film on original stoner culture with a slightly more serious though highly nostalgic flavour has to be ‘Dog Soldier’ staring Nick Nolte as the anti hero stuck with an incredibly large amount of heroin and an equaly large amount of people who want to kill him.It was Nolte at his best…even the likes of Mary Whitehouse would have empathised with him in the final scenes.
Another one worth watching (again serious) is ‘What we lost in the fire’ where the ‘smack-head’ turns out to be the hero and there’s an unexpected, though honest closing line on addiction…the cold turkey scenes are more honest than most hollywood typos too.
And ‘Trainspotting’ well that one must be the ultimate for anyone who has ever found themselves ‘worshiping the toilet’ wether due to drink, drugs or a dodgy vindaloo!…not for children or the squeemish though!! Cheech and Chong were the original classics(had a similar experiance to the ‘His name is Ralph scene once – only the name came out as Bjork!). Nice site peeps!

lmao most of you people don’t have clue about what a stoner movie is! I have been trawling through your list for any incline of stoner movies out there, or opinions (so i dont download crap torrents)…

I have watched most of them, and therefore decided to compile my own list, of what should be in a stoner film, and be the best stoner films of all time.

    1. Cheech and Chong series (next movie is best) and c=c are the best. thats what weed is all about, even though there is plenty of mention of other drugs in thier films.
    2. Reefer madness/history of marijuana propaganda.
    3/ Don’t be a menace/how high/marlon brothers’ films (black comedy)
    4/ Brat pack films
    5/ 80’s college films.

Just because there hasn’t been that many really good stoner films recently, a good comedy that makes you piss your pants is not a stoner movie. This is sub sub culture.

Stoner films are about getting stoned.

This is comedy. You don’t have to be stoned to have a laugh, just like you don’t need drugs or alcohol
    to have good sex.

I would say that a stoner movie for a start has to be about hash or weed, and involve copious amounts of it all the way through.

like i would say that lock stock is a gangster film. Eastend gangster not mafia gangster. Even though the plot involves some students growing shitloads of cannabis.

Judging by the misconceptions of reefer madness, and coloctivly the whole propaganda at the time surrounding it, in 1930’s america (funnily at the time of the depression) made it extremely funny because of the seriousness and that’s what makes good comedy.

When you smoke really good laughing tackle
and you sit down with your mates, rolling it, bonging it etc…a good “stonerovie should make you get the giggles so much that you can’t breath, and fall of your couch.

I also think that times in america and england also make a big difference. Like over there you get your jocks (like your bullies) miss populars (bitches) geeks (you all know who you are) etc.

Alot of roadtrip movies add that element of 420 culture. and don’t get me started on the backpack.

Films that are comedy and have you rolling around on the floor laughing your tits off, are often credited as stoner films because it is socialy acceptable that most teens smoke weed/pot. I thought skin deep was funny as f*** no mention of weed in there. Batchelor party another.

Adam Sandler films and ones he has produced also, get mistaken for stoner films/movies. He tends to portray himself as the underdog, who makes up with his dad, and gets the girl…

Don’t fall into the trap of subcatorgorising stoner films at the mere mention of weed.

Cheech and Chong are the one and only true stoner films ever. They started it. And they will finish the 420 culture.

Canabis is a class b drug/narcotic in england, even though amsterdam is only a quick ferry ride away lots of people grow thier own. Teen movies are also classed as stoner films just because a main character smokes weed.

And there are not many english films involving a group af friends smoking weed, getting high, getting laid, going on mad missions (roadtrips) geting done by the cops, causing a riot, being chased, new boy at school, getting stoned in class, getting stoned at work, geting stoned 24/7, being disowned by parents, slacking/being a bum etc etc etc even though we do it everday. roflmfao.

Watch out for the metaphores and cliche’s.

If it makes you laugh your tits off, you get really high, and you are with your good homies, who cares if it’s a stoner film, as long as you have a good time!!!

So if anybody wants to reply, please do…

    Have a nice J.!

    Richie V (England)

As you can tell, i’m really stoned while writing this. P.S since whan has Pink Floyd ever been about getting stoned?

Thier music is all about Sid Barrett. His life and mental health issues, and not wanting to be in the band. Even though there are some psychedelic tuned and visuals in thier music videos, and are good to watch while stoned, its all about acid. Just like the beatles… Acid.

Sid Barrett never wanted to come down, just like Major Tom and Ziggy Stardust (bowie)

Hey like the list but i think it should look like this man

    10.Rolling Kanasas
    9.Reffer Madness
    8.How High
    7.Grandmas Boy
    6.Harold and Kumar
    5.Bong Water
4.Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
    3.Dazed and Confused
    2.Half Baked
1.Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke

Reason being that Cheech and Chong own the #1 spot hands down same as half baked at #2 its more or less the new age face of stoner comedy dazed and confused is like a great new movie that represents the age where smoking weed was a way of life, as for fear and loathing in las vegas watch it cause its intense, Bong water is a great stoner flick that is a must see,Gradmas Boy ha this movie is full of stoner comedy,Harold and kumar i placed pretty low for it being a good stoner movie but i felt its not as good as whats under it, how high great movie not to much to say about it tho, reffer madness was made by a church to help promote durg freenessness but turned out to be a kick a$$ smoke movie and promoted more drug use then it helped to depromte it, finally Rolling Kanasas is a great them but lacks the fact that no one in the movie actually smokes weed its based of the journey to find it plus its funny so there ya have it my reccomendation and i chose all these based on the relveants of weed its pretty acurate but serously Cheech and Chong #1

I don’t think this is a good list, or even a good discussion of the list, you guys seem to be focusing on movies made from yester-year, No offense but I smoke alot of pot and watch alot of movies and the shit you gus call the best is shit you can watch once a year, what about your stoner flicks that you can watch daily? I mean shit do you guys really think CHEECH and CHONG out does P.Express? Would you buy schwag instead of kind? No, I don’t care how you answer but hopefully you’ll read this and keep looking because this list sucks donkey balls

First, you’ll notice this list was compiled well over a year ago. Had I done it more recently, Pineapple Express probably would have found its way onto the list.

Note: Cheech and Chong easily best Pineapple Express.
Note 2: If I had made a top 20 list, I too would have been able to add most of the movies listed on the list you cite.
    Note 3: Thanks for visiting!

Im tired of hearing about movies like pineapple express let me just say posers 3 reasons why

3:The dialouge is corny and fake
    2:Its not real pot
1:They arent real stoners end of disscusion

Goods movies but posers compared to Cheech and Chong cause when they went amsterdam there was no faking that lol so think about the reallity of things and thats what makes it a true stoner movie. Oh and Jay and Silent Bob are legit.

4.Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
    3.Dazed and Confused

I sense that a lot of you aren’t even stoners. How can you badmouth Pineapple Express? Have you seriously watched it high? The bit where Red gets out the car and blows the guys foot off had me in fucking fits. Even parts such as the buzzer at the door, or the girlfriends dad’s dialogue are just pure stoner comedy.

  46. The Critical Movie Critics

Seriously don’t think many of the people here are stoners. Wouldn’t be having petty arguments about which movie is better if that was the case.

“Arguing on the internet is like running in the special Olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded.”

    Think about that.

Definitely a solid list. I won’t lie though, this list is good enough for me with just the inclusion of The Big Lebowski. First off, I can watch this one over and over (no, there are no drugs necessary).

I really couldn’t tell you what it is about The Big Lebowski, it just clicks for me. With that said, I’ve yet to see a few on the list and Up In Smoke is damn funny.

How come no one has mentioned Saving Grace? I love the thought of old people growing and smoking pot . The characters in the small town are great. Someone we all know, who you would never think would partake in “the evil weed”.

Not a bad list, but i really can’t understand why Half Baked is the next to last movie in the list. I love Half Baked, although its a bit intellectually undemanding :D

Your Highness is a newer film and it’s pretty funny. It’s about a valiant prince and his kinda fuck up brother that are out on a knights quest to save the princes’ girl. Lots of toking and funny medieval jokes with dragons and shit. Good stuff.

Well, you did a great job, I think your ranking is quite good, although I think Half Baked and How High deserve to be in a higher position on your list, they are both hilarious !

this writer and others have confused “stoner scenes” and “stoner characters” with “stoner films”….stoner films are a genre of films that are entirely driven by pot culture, plot, characters, settings, etc….half baked, how high, up in smoke, and harold and kumar are the only actual ‘stoner films’ on here….dazed and confused comes close but is more a ‘hangout film’ or ‘coming of age films,’ similarly for fast times and friday….having a scene or two with pot, or classic pot secondary character, isn’t a stoner film—so you give fast times top spot in a list of ilms it doesnt even belong in…shows the ignorance of the writer, and the dated age and bias of the writer from good memories smoking weed watching movie hanging out and loving sean penn….doesnt make it a stoner film….big lebowski has a stoner character, not stoner film…clerks has memorable secondary stoner characters, not a stoner film..etc etc..
