Don’t ask me why the upcoming alien invasion movie is titled Battleship after the mega-popular Hasbro board game; as best as I can tell, other than the fact the US Navy and its arsenal (carriers, destroyers and, yes, battleships) are in play, the movie has nothing to do with the game (I’d choke if the spoken line, “He sank my battleship!” was in it). What it does have, in the same vein as Transformers (another Hasbro property) is lots and lots of explosions and a story line that plays second fiddle to those explosions. The latest trailer is chock full of effects for the Universal Pictures production — prepare to be whelmed, at best.
Battleship stars Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch and Peter MacNicol.
Battleship protects US theaters on May 18, 2012 and UK theaters on April 11, 2012.
