Movie Trailer: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first tease for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the 2nd installment in the Hobbit film adaptation trilogy. Picking up where “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” left off, the film continues the epic adventure involving the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarf, Thorin Oakenshield and his 12 clansmen and the great Wizard Gandalf as they seek to unseat the dragon Smaug and reclaim the lost Kingdom of Erebor. From the trailer, it seems clear this installment is sure to please fans of the novel more as the silliness which plagued the first has been set aside for stronger drama and adventure and it has the ultimate inclusion of the thing that everyone has been waiting for: A taste of the dragon itself. Also with a larger role in this chapter is fan favorite, Legolas (Orlando Bloom). It’s a definite must watch!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug stars Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Billy Connolly, Evangeline Lilly, Richard Armitage, John Bell, Luke Evans and Stephen Fry.

These 2 minutes are already better than An Unexpected Journey! So Psyched!

SMAUG and IMAX. The perfect combination.

The lackluster CGI in the first film killed it for me, so while this looks marginally better, it’s still not to my level of expectation. Let’s hope there is still time to retouch the CGI here because I really want to like this!

CGI will get better I’m sure, I’m concerned that the movie is going to be a colossal failure from the story telling point. Breaking the book up into three movies was a risky proposition.

Honestly, as much as I wanted to see Smaug, it was a better idea for them to have left him out of the trailer.

So long as Dwarves are dominating the screen there is going to be a lot of riff raffing between them. I’m with you though, they didn’t strike a happy balance with it in AUJ.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read The Hobbit, but if memory serves me right Legolas wasn’t mentioned in it. Seems he is a focus character in this though …

Legolas is a beloved character in LOTR, so they’re tying the storylines together.

Clear improvement over the first, just like Two Towers was a vast improvement over The Fellowship.
