Movie Trailer: Maleficent (2014)

Disney has unveiled the first trailer for Maleficent, their prequel of sorts to “Sleeping Beauty” that tells the tale of how the wicked queen came to be. In it, Angelina Jolie, as Maleficent, slinks around the periphery between light and dark while the lovely Aurora (Elle Fanning) frolics and plays with fairies and other woodland creatures. The shadowy shots and voice-over, sets the tension well enough, although it looks like Jolie is trying too hard to be “fairy-tale evil.” Little else is revealed about the story, so fans of the tale will have to wait for subsequent peeks for more. Until then check out the minimalist trailer thanks to Disney.

Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Juno Temple, Sam Riley, Miranda Richardson, Brenton Thwaites and Imelda Staunton.

Official Synopsis:
From Disney comes Maleficent, the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal — an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom — and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Maleficent grows a cold heart in US and UK theaters on May 30, 2014.

The Maleficent character seems to be a good fit for Jolie.

It’s about time my favorite Disney villain is getting her shot. I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

I pray this is good. Maleficent gave me nightmares when I was a kid.
