Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Johnny Depp is one of the best actors of this generation — even if I have to look past the fact he resides in that shit infested country France. I don’t think there has been a movie starring Mr. Depp that I haven’t found entertaining on some level. It is good to see him sow his oats in this blockbuster sequel as I have heard he works for peanuts on those artsy-fartsy type flicks no one watches.

Anyways, in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Depp relives his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, an often confused and awfully lucky pirate. This time around he finds himself searching for a key which unlocks the chest of Davy Jones — a nefarious creature, whom Sparrow owes his soul to. Once again, rounding out the main cast is Orlando Bloom (as Will Turner) and Keira Knightley (as Elizabeth Swann); both find themselves involved with Sparrow against their will in an effort to clear their good names.

The best part of this movie is without a doubt the underlying humor. There aren’t many movies of this type that have been able to pull off the subtle dark humor along with intense action and adventure. This is clearly what set “Pirates of the Caribbean” apart — and once again Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest delivers on what it’s predecessor started. Sparrow’s quirkiness and odd behavior are altogether worth the price of admission. Tag along the well crafted story, superb CGI and well shot action sequences and a winner is born.

That being said, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest isn’t quite as good the first movie. Where the first movie came out like a thoroughbred, this movie comes out like a pony. The characters are ultimately the same; there isn’t any character growth — something I expect in a sequel. There are also, many subplots skipping in and out of the movie and at times I found myself wondering what the fuck was going on.

Even with that, the movie sets itself up nicely for the third installment, due out next year. Although I expect the the next movie to lose additional steam, I will plan on seeing it. So should you.

I'm an old, miserable fart set in his ways. Some of the things that bring a smile to my face are (in no particular order): Teenage back acne, the rain on my face, long walks on the beach and redneck women named Francis. Oh yeah, I like to watch and criticize movies.

are you kidding me? Dead man’s chest was a big letdown. Depp, who I truly admire as an actor, was gay more than ever before. Besides the beautiful scenery and some computer graphics, the movie had nothing else to offer. Wld recommend watching at home….not worth watching in the theater.

I think that the character of Jack Sparrow is rather flighty to say the least, but it is this metrosexualness that makes him a likable character. If he was simply another evil, drunken brute of a pirate this movie would be unremarkable.

I could not but stop myself from wondering from Vishkill’s mention Depp being gay that ever before, yet then he happened to admire the beautiful scenery. Something just does not sound kosher. I think it’s all laced in pink charade. Tch Tch!

Just to add my two cents to the movie, I thought the movie was pure fun and loved the little spice between Keira and Depp in a subtle way. I can’t wait for the third installment to have a scene cut out for threesome.

    I shall drink to that.

I’d drink to that as well. Of course they’d need to find another suitable girl to sleep with Keira and me. :)

I know this review came out months ago, but I came across it today while on the site and felt I had to comment. What a pile of crap this movie was. I watched this on a plane from LA to Philly and found myself looking forward to the movie getting done so I could spend the last 2 hours of the flight staring at the seat in front of me. By the end, I found myself not even caring how it finished. I thought the first installment of the film was pretty decent, but this one was a letdown.
